I agree, Emma. The central problem is now delivery rather than vision, but I wonder whether the workforce challenge extends beyond shipyards, software engineers and serving personnel.

Atlantic Bastion’s autonomous platforms and distributed sensors will generate enormous quantities of underwater data. Turning that into useful maritime awareness requires hydrographers, geophysicists, oceanographers and experienced survey operators who can establish reliable baselines, interpret change and distinguish potentially hostile activity from the normal variability of the seabed.

Much of that expertise currently sits in commercial industry, while Britain’s educational pipeline is contracting. A genuinely Hybrid Navy may therefore need a hybrid workforce: regular personnel supported through contractor-operated capability and an RNVR-style hydrographic reserve of trained, cleared and regularly exercised civilian specialists.

Otherwise, Britain risks acquiring the platforms and sensors while losing the people required to understand what they find.

So, the Type 83 is going to be salami sliced into a number of T91 and T94 platforms... and these are supposed to be cheaper than one big ship?

They don't want any more big, exquisite and expensive platforms, so... they're going to build a larger number of small, exquisite and expensive platforms! To take the crew away, you need to make these things either stupidly simple (which means they'll be useless) or so incredibly well engineered that they can survive weeks or months at sea without requiring the application of a human hand. To achieve this, they'll need to have component reliability rates that would make NASA blush!

Cheap, they will not be. Not at all. Not if they are to be useful for more than a few days at a time.

And so far I'm only thinking of the missile platform, which is probably the simplest and most rugged variant. What about the radar ship? I could write pages about this, but will try to keep it brief: Type 45 has a big, complicated radar up high on big hull for many very, very good reasons. Type 45 also comes with 250 trained crew who operate and, most importantly, maintain said radar. They are proposing to put smaller (and therefore less capable) radars on smaller masts (this is an assumption, unless T94 is going to be a Type 45 sized hull) and, again, engineer these things with NASA levels of reliability...

You know what? I'm tired. I just don't have the energy to keep going. It's all so painfully obvious. The T45s will get expensive life extension refits in the 2030s and every other nation will keep all their big expensive destroyers, and keep building more, and they'll just get some missile barge Type 91s to deepen the locally available magazines, and these will follow "mother" around but most importantly, "mother" will still be around because war at sea is not war on the grassy plains of Ukraine and anyone who can't see that has no business spending the money. The RN can see that... they've been pursuing autonomous AI this-and-that primarily because they haven't got the cash to fund enough people, but they know as well as anyone that the future is not manned verses unmanned, it's a combination of both: a Type 83 with a minimum VLS for self defence, and more space on "cruiser style" facilities and aviation, with some T91 "arsenal barges" to add magazine depth, is the most likely future.

I think the CCV will have some big empty "mission modules" in it, and one day they will magically be filled with Mk. 41s, and the history books will summarise this by saying that in 2026 the UK renamed the Type 83 project to CVV, decided that this meant it would be cheaper, and then carried on as it always intended to.
